About Sarah
Sarah Lawhorne is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist working in fine art photography and poetry. Her work explores the quiet beauty of the natural world, inviting viewers to contemplate and connect with moments of stillness in everyday life.
Fine Art Photography
Working primarily in natural landscape and still life photography, Sarah explores light, texture, form, and feeling. Whether capturing dune grass moving softly in the wind or the curves of a spring bloom, her work is an intimate glimpse into quiet moments that are often overlooked.
Not seeking the dramatic, her contemplative photography is based in observation, simplicity, and the mindful awareness of place. Each frame is a chance to notice and reflect on our surroundings and how we each relate to our environments.
Creative Process
Sarah’s creative process is influenced by contemplative practice and Zen philosophy. She believes that art allows us to find the answers we seek in our personal and spiritual lives, both in the seeing of work as well as the creative act. She is drawn to transitory moments and the space between darkness and light, motion and stillness. In this place, presence leads to flashes of enlightenment.
Though approaching each image with a previsualized idea in mind, Sarah allows spontaneity and chance to take over, staying open to what unfolds. This approach results in photography that feels timeless, singular, and quietly emotional.
Writing & Publications
In addition to photography, Sarah is an author and poet.
Her first book, Mystery & Manifestations (2024), explores Taoist philosophy through black-and-white photography, essays, and quotations from ancient sages.
Her photography has appeared in Newport Life Magazine, F-Stop Magazine, RI Monthly, and Creative Quarterly: The Journal of Art and Design. Her haiku and senryu poetry have been published in Modern Haiku, frogpond, cattails, and other literary journals.
Photography and writing have provided a means of growth, exploration, and understanding in her life. She seeks to inspire others to see each moment with curious eyes, realizing the wonder that can be found in simplicity. Sarah believes that noticing these small instants of beauty each day can lead to a more contented life, and her work is her attempt to convey this philosophy.
Through photography and writing, Sarah explores attention, presence, and the quiet intelligence of the natural world. Her work offers an invitation to slow down and see more closely.
